Armando’s Gallery House in Redding

Armando7
A dinner at Armando’s Gallery House is unlike anything you are otherwise liable to experience in Redding.
Armando Mejorado is a Redding artist, who works in a broad range of media. He opened an art gallery in a charming building on the Promenade, and began hosting parties. The parties turned into regular food servings and wine pairing. In addition, you can paint on Thursdays. Have some wine with friends and go to work on canvas. It’s incredibly unique and special.

They offer a prix fixe menu, from which you may order a la carte. You can find out what’s on Armando’s restaurant menu on any given night via Facebook. Armando’s seems only to rely on word of mouth and social media to get the word out. They encourage online sharing and interaction. At FB, you can see images of his past special events. Check out the recent Burlesque event for Valentines Day.

When you step inside and get a table, the attentive staff suggests you get up and walk around for a look. The decor changes continually. Downstairs, Armando has a gallery showing of his work. It reveals depth and authenticity seldom glimpsed.

I published about Armando’s Gallery House Morroccan Dinner a while back, thinking it was a one time event. It seems the events proved popular, and turned into nightly gatherings. It’s fabulous for private parties.

Armando’s doesn’t simply blur the lines between culinary arts and fine art. It acknowledges they are one and the same.

Here’s the thing:

Like any art gallery showing, something this special has a beginning and an end.
Premier and Finale.

I suggest you get down there right away, before the moment is gone forever. Don’t wait and let the opportunity slip away.

Pope Francis pays a visit to the U.S.

I’m happy that the Pope is visiting the U.S. today. I admire him. I was raised a Catholic, although I have not considered myself to be such since a young man. This Pope seems much different than most during my lifetime. Pope Francis appears more humble, thoughtful, and less imperious. I find him inspiring. Last year we toured the Vatican on a somewhat rainy day, and I was lucky to capture some very nice photos. I thought the occasion of his visit a good excuse to look them over again.
Below, we pose in St Peter’s Square, where the Pope addresses crowds.
Kary and Skip at the VaticanThere was so much gorgeous art and architecture at the Vatican, it was overwhelming.

From Wikipedia: “Throughout his public life, Pope Francis has been noted for his humility, his concern for the poor, and his commitment to interfaith dialogue.” A much needed spirit for our times. Welcome to the U.S, Pope Francis. We are blessed by your presence.

Antlers Bridge fish sculpture painting

Capture a couple images of the new Antlers bridge decor while zooming by on Interstate 5. You can see the workers painting scales, for scale.

Fish painting on Bridge Fish painting on Bridge2Not workers, then. Artists. Anyway I posted about the Antlers Bridge artwork here before.  I didn’t know it would be painted. It seems like the end product will only be visible from the lake, and only when the lake is near full at that.  For now, you can catch a glimpse from I-5.

Bridge. Art. It’s Really Redding.

Northstate photographer David Gendron

David Gendron3David Gendron lives and shoots in our far Northern California region. His images often range from surreal to abstract and beyond.

Provocative, and evocative.

Visions well worth our view. Click on any of the thumbnails here to go to his online gallery.

David Gendron1Now living in Cottonwood, David is self described thus:

I’m on Earth for a photo assignment. Not sure where my next job will be.

Well, we’re glad you stopped in for a look around, and to show us what you saw, David. You are Really Redding.

Visit the Courthouse Museum in Old Shasta

Before Redding existed, Shasta was the queen city of Northern California. Shasta’s mostly fireproof main street now lies in ruin. But you can catch a glimpse life in the Gold Rush era and more at the Courthouse Museum.
Courthouse Museum Christmas 2013The ruins are now Shasta State Historic Park. There are also live demonstrations of pioneer skills like blacksmithing that go on in the park. Here are a few images I captured of what the museum typically has on display.

Keeping in touch with the past. Just a 6 mile ride west of town, it’s Really Redding.

The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

Over the years I’ve been writing here, I discovered I love combining words with images.

John Koenig take it a step further by defining new words with images. Words that describe emotions we all have in common, but for which no word has yet been coined.
The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.

This is one of those ideas that has to be shared to be understood. Here’s an example:

nodus tollens
n. the realization that the plot of your life doesn’t make sense to you anymore-that although you thought you were following the arc of the story, you keep finding yourself immersed in passages you don’t understand, that don’t even seem to belong in the same genre-which requires you to go back and reread the chapters you had originally skimmed to get to the good parts, only to learn that all along you were supposed to choose your own adventure.

Another of my favorites:

avenoir
n. We take it for granted that life moves forward. But you move as a rower moves, facing backwards—you can see where you’ve been, but not where you’re going. And your boat is steered by a younger version of you. It’s hard not to wonder what life would be like facing the other way…

John publishes every other Sunday. I am curating this here not because I love sorrow so much, but because his work is so… what’s the word?

Viva Downtown accomplishes great things for Redding. I saw these terrific looking upcoming banner designs in a FB post and thought I’d share them here. Nice style.
