Amusing signs on Hilltop Drive

We like amusing signs here at Really Redding. This one’s on Hilltop.

That works out to only $37 each for most of you. Meanwhile, the nearby Herb Specialists shop looks certain to be another marijuana collective. Especially in our town, with about 30 collectives scattered about (See Bruce Ross’ handy guide map). Ironically, it’s not.

Finally, there’s this. The view while stopped at the light going south on Hilltop at Mistletoe. Intentional or accidental, you decide.

How we make law in California – in parking lots

Gather signatures for initiatives We make decisions about law and governance in Redding’s supermarket parking lots. Our initiative process puts power directly in the hands of the people – people shopping – and goes around the legislators we pay to get this stuff right. Shown above is the bait. Seen yesterday in Redding, a couple of signs for a petition to legalize and tax marijuana. Not a bad idea IMHO. In fact, the marijuana bend oregon sells is already legalized with several other similar dispensaries throughout the state and this system could work in California. But it’s bait and switch. He’s actually being paid to have you sign several petitions. One concerns marijuana, but another squashes municipalities from starting their own utilities. Sponsored by PG&E of course, but he doesn’t tell you that. Another has to do with car insurance. Whether you go to Insurance Quotes or other places to get it, it is important for every driver. And yet, he doesn’t explain the complex issue well at all, and why would he know? And am I knowledgeable about the subtleties of car insurance laws? No. I’m not. Are you? It is easy to become knowledgable on car insurance though, with Robert Truly’s review of Prudential on Truly Insurance’s website. It’s also rather important to be knowledgable on car insurance, seeing as this is what saves us if we are caught in a car accident.rancstble atoay you in remember, having car insurance and understanding how it can help is one of the best tI could co moree sooug than I ale trdchy m tha.
eck’re not being stung with very little c out this totally relevant link to Thomas Elias in Redding.com today. “Just say no to signature gatherers.”
However, that being said, just say yes to voting today. It is an election day, so be informed and make yourself heard.

Fresh strawberries in November ~ the fruits of global warming?

Maybe it’s global warming, maybe it’s just ordinary. Don’t know, but in Redding you can buy locally grown organic strawberries in November. A month when other states are shoveling snow and such. I’m sure those places have their charms, but we have the strawberries, a newspaper, and a cuppa coffee on a sunny November Sunday. And oh yes, they taste as good as they look.

Ideas will not work unless you do

A wise thought seen today at this landmark Redding Church. The striking pyramid form located the top of Placer is visible for miles around town. The First Presbytarians have a website HERE. They have been active in Redding for over 130 years.

Cow Creek tire swing

Saw this tire swing on Cow Creek near Whitmore yesterday. It called out to me. Too cool for an Autumn swim, I settled for a photograph or two.

Overexposed going for the long shutter time ‘misty water’ look. Photographers who master that technique have my admiration.

Cat gazebo

Butch, the neighbor’s cat wandered in this morning and made himself at home. We thought this was just a stylish end-table, but Butch quickly identified it as a cat gazebo for feline meditations. Who mew?

Fall run Salmon spawn in Clear Creek near Redding

Restoration efforts have paid off for Clear Creek, but even so, this Fall run seems way below recent years.

We tried to imagine prior runs where the creek was filled with fish from edge to edge.

We spotted these battered sojourners enjoying the gravel beds below the lookout on Clear Creek Road near Redding. They are kind of difficult to make out, but we were at least a hundred feet away, and far above them.

Esperanza's Tamales

Esperanza's Tamales
Esperanza and Luis sell their Tamales at the Farmer’s Market in Redding. A yummy tamal in the morning makes the rest of the day go well (just $2). They have beef, pork, chicken, and a veggie version. All good. We like them all. You can get their salsa, and put on red or green sauce, and sour creme even. Delicious. Then, take home a half dozen or so fresh ones for dinner later (just $10). Steam them up, and wow. Wow.
As an aside, Redding based Esperanza Tamales only sells at Farmer’s markets. While they would like to have a storefront operation, they just don’t have the means to put that together. Hmm. Maybe you have an empty storefront in town. You’re not alone. There’s about a million square feet of empty commercial space in Redding. Maybe you could make these folks a deal. Low startup, moving to a better net as they build. Could be a better option for your other tenants than just another marijuana collective. Or maybe a good addition to an otherwise vacant strip mall. These tamales generate traffic. Just ask the other vendors at the Farmer’s Market. They all eat here. Call Esperanza (530) 222 8541 if this idea started some gears moving in your mind.
I’d eat there.

Fiddling with Windows 7 today

Been messing with Micro$oft’s latest OS here the last few hours, trying to get my workstation back to useful. I like Windows 7 so far, but it’s the usual M$ nerd fest. This is appropriate:

I haven’t had an Apple computer in years, but lately I’ve been mighty tempted. We use a lot of computers around here, and gradually I have grown less patient with all the constant fiddly bits to keep Windows running. I could go on about it…..(and on and on today…)

Redding League of Women Voters growing online

Erin and I have been working on helping to get the Redding League of Women Voters more online. They have long had a website and a print newsletter, but it’s a real adjustment to go more online. It will be worth the effort. The League has always played an important role in offering non-biased information of public interest, and surely in this wired world, the need is stronger than ever. Your right to accurate and factual information before a vote is a right worth fighting for. They are just getting started. You can join the group on Facebook.
