Sheraton Redding breaks ground

Actually a pretty momentous occasion for our town. Makes me (even more) proud to be a citizen of Redding. Copied this from Facebook/ReviveRedding. Just have to share!

A pop up Parklet and Market Hall in Redding

We stopped by the Pop Up Parklet and Market Hall on California Street in Redding and snapped a few images. This event goes on for just 3 days, Sept 17-19, so be sure to stop by and catch a glimpse of a perhaps more friendly urban Redding street.

WHAT IS THIS EVENT?
It’s a temporary, community-led project to look at downtown Redding from the perspective of community members and business owners and pilot new ways to build the community we want – today!

We will get creative, share new ideas and create immeasurable goodwill for local businesses and the downtown district.

The three-day event includes

A people-friendly outdoor seating area creating a parklet and a bicycle corral, with other living streets features such as creative wayfinding signs. This is a public park, and is open all day to the public.
A culinary and local business pop-up offering local gourmet foods and gifts. The Market Hall will be open from 7:30 a.m to 10:00 p.m. each day, with breakfast, lunch, and an evening reception each day.

Family baseball fun with Redding’s Colt 45s

Baseball season in Redding has begun again. If you are a fan of this sport, you will already know that. Our family loves playing and watching baseball so we’re all very excited about the new season. I’ve always been a baseball fan, even from a young age. I remember my parents bought me a pair of team baseball pants and a baseball so that I could join the local team. I had such great fun, however now that I’m older, I definitely prefer watching baseball to playing it! What better way to begin the season than to watch college basketball players show their town what they can do. If you like playing baseball yourself, that can make for even more fun than watching! If you’re looking to improve your baseball skills, take a look at these Homerun techniques! Soon everyone will be watching you in a stadium get an impressive homerun. If you have been following this sport for a while now, you may be someone who would be interested in checking out companies such as FanDuel, to start playing Baseball virtually. With the rise of technology, this was going to happen sooner or later. Whether you choose to take on players across the country or your friends, you can become part of a team. Plus, you can even win points, just like the real game!

On the pitch, Tiger Field has served Redding now for 91 years, and currently hosts our Colt 45s. We attended last night’s game and had a blast! From the Redding Colt 45s website:

“Every summer college baseball players from across the country come to Redding for two months of intense competition in a minor league-like atmosphere.”

C458I’ve never photographed a baseball game, so that was really fun. Tiger Field is very clean, and the food was great. The lovely Karry had a prime rib sandwich prepared by none other than our friend Cal De Mercurio. Not surprisingly, we saw lots of friends here. Here are some images.

On this perfect weather night, the home team won by a comfortable margin over their opponent Santa Rosa Rosebuds. I saw a lot of good sportsmanship and spirited baseball. It’s cliche to say we were all winners last night, but so true.

Pro tip: Don’t park too near the gate, unless you don’t mind your car catching the occasional foul ball.

91 years of baseball. It’s Really Redding.

A Taste of History in Old Shasta

This is the third year that the Shasta Historical Society has hosted a fundraiser in Old Shasta. We attended with great delight.

It looks like others were delighted as well. Good turnout. Great to see old friends and new.

There was a raffle, and both silent and live auction of numerous interesting items. Many fondly recalled the Old Time Fiddle Fair held annually on the same grounds years ago. This event had a similar vibe. The setting is quite striking, behind the old Courthouse Museum in the Shasta State Park. Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, and staff for putting it on.

Pros & Joes Grilldown downtown

Block party in Redding today. Actually, several blocks. Competition between local and professional barbeque teams for the tastiest grill, as chosen by popular vote.
ProJoe1Here are a few of the images I captured today.

Like most humans in possession of both an X and a Y chomosone, I was born believing I too could grill. Over the years having sampled some really heavenly barbecue in other parts of the country, I came to realize my grilling prowess was more delusion than delicious. A tip of the tongs then, to these chefs gathered in Redding today. May the best grill win.

GTO drag race car for sale in Redding

Longtime readers will recall my friend Bob passed away a while back, and now his family needs to sell his race car. With all the car folks in town for Kool April Nites, I figure it would be good to post this again. Please share widely, and to anyone you know who might be interested. $80K into it, offered at $60K. When Bob tried to describe what it was like to drive it, words failed. Must be amazing! There are going to be plenty of roller drag cars for sale, but perhaps not as heavily modified as this one!
