Almost 3000 upvotes as of this morning! Reddit, self described as the Front Page of the Internet, has boosted Redding on its Front Page this morning. An image on Subreddit Earth Porn (which by the way can I add is not a subreddit for adult pornography like you’d find at www.sex-hd.com) by local photographer Cory Poole is delighting browsers all over the web today.

Fajitas for Fathers Day via Upstate News

I like to read the Sunday papers in the morning, when I can. A local Redding business named Upstate News delivers the Chronicle to our door. Reading the Food section of the Chron always makes me really hungry, though. Yesterday was quiet, so I decided to follow the featured recipe from writer Lynn Char Bennett for marinated skirt steak fajitas. I didn’t take any pictures of my results since I was too busy eating, but really I did like how it turned out. I can recommend that you try her “Marinade can work some magic” at the link.SkirtSteakFajitaUpstate News will deliver any of several newspapers to your door, including USA Today and the New York Times. They are also planning on delivering the Sacramento Bee soon, so call (530) 246-2333 if you want to inquire about that.

We still like newsprint. And we are fortunate to live in an area where a San Francisco newspaper still feels somewhat local.

New paywall policy at redding.com?

That seems to be the gist of what I’m reading in a letter from Publisher Shanna Cannon. Unless I understand the term “paywall” wrong. The memo doesn’t use the term. But if I read this correctly, after May 14 only subscribers will get access to full content at redding.com. And perhaps more significant, at least to me, only subscribers will have the privilege of commenting online. With any luck, this will moderate the often irrational content somewhat. One can hope.

I generally regard this as good news. We’ll see. It makes sense that a newspaper needs a consistent source of income to continue to provide the in-depth reporting our community deserves. So I wish them well with this new model.

Shasta Living Streets celebrates on Park Marina Drive

We really enjoyed pedaling around the Park Marina area with no cars around today, courtesy of ShastaLivingStreets.org and Rader Traffic Control. The neighborhood presents an entirely different perspective by bike.

Getting a cheeseburger at Fallis Around Town in Redding
As amazing as it was out there, it’s truly bittersweet. Both Erin and I spent our morning ride describing to one another how lovely it would be if Park Marina instead was lined with shops and restaurants facing the river. And if it incorporated bikes and walking, all the time. All these people would be out every day enjoying our short urban waterfront. Our hidden jewel. Maybe riding bikes from bistro to sports bar for a pint. So beautiful. So pleasant. Just nice.
I’ve written about this subject before, here. There is a Park Marina vision. I didn’t make this up.
For now, I’m just sorry about it. Just moping about a vision unrealized, on the one day a year you can almost taste it. Just for a day.
We now return you to your previously scheduled automotive purgatory.

State of the City Redding 2012

I attended the luncheon yesterday for the State of the City address. I love Redding. Evidently, I’m not the only one.
State of the City ReddingOne real highlight was the “appearance” of Redding’s first mayor, C.C. Bush, from the past. It was a well done and thoughtful apparition. Interesting to think about the Redding of the past and compare it to the present. Singing the national anthem

Another highlight was this young lady singing the National Anthem. Heartstrings pulled, right off the charts. Good work.
State of the city 2012
The theme was Redding as a “Can-Do” community.
It can be.
There was also a lot of emphasis on the giving nature of our community and our citizens.
We are indeed.
REU protesters in Redding
Also seen, a rare public protest of REU, Redding’s electric utility. Good to see citizen activists expressing their opinion.

There may well be some room for improvement in the structure of our local electric utility. That said, we enjoy reliable and relatively cheap power. Also, as I have opined here before, the protestations rejecting the city policy of “Red Tagging” homes with no electricity service as uninhabitable may be well intended, but are misguided.

Although it sounds nice in theory to let people live in their homes without power, I have seen the reality. As a real estate agent sometimes working with foreclosed homes that quite often have no utilities, I have personally witnessed the awful results. No food refrigeration in Redding heat. Fire hazard candles. Ocean waves of fleas living in wall to wall carpet that has not seen a vacuum cleaner in months. Rats in the dark. If adults choose to live this way, yeah, maybe we should let them. But I see there are very often small children in those homes. That’s what makes it intolerable. That’s the Red Tag reality in our Can-Do city.

New video features Tony Meredith dancing about Redding

Tony Meredith is a wonderful local dancer. The video was shot around Redding, and is posted in hi-def. Warning, song lyrics NSFW. Unless like us, you work someplace tolerant of artistic vocabulary expression. Set it for higher definition.

I met Tony through the Dancing with the Stars Shasta County Style fundraising, and I have come to appreciate the skill and hard work that goes into the style. Nicely shot here. Dancing about Redding.

Rare Annular Eclipse directly over Redding

Redding was not far from being directly under the path of totality for yesterday’s rare Annular Eclipse of the Sun.

Just beginningApproaching totality
TotalityPast totalityInteresting to look at the ring and see the shadow of the moon racing across the Earth. It was a big event around here. I hope nobody tried looking directly at it. There were plenty of warnings.

Lovely backyard flower photo “The Embrace.”

Took this image yesterday of a French Iris being being curled on by the tendrils of a viny plant of some sort. Looks like a tender embrace.
The embrace, irises in Redding CAI flipped it around and saved it at 1920 X 1200 to fit as my screensaver. If you’d like to use it, you can click on it here:
It’s a striking and somewhat poetic image for my screen background. I have some other Redding images I’ve taken that rotate across my desktop over time. I’ll be linking to them as time goes by. If you’d like to use one as a screensaver, but perhaps need a different size/ratio, let me know.

The Ski Park looks pretty nice today, although there is no night skiing tonight. Had to post this webcam snap to make up for the drier one I posted earlier in the year. This looks like good Spring skiing.
