Pilgrim Congregational Church and Frank Lloyd Wright

The Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding is a unique and significant building. It was designed in 1958 by world famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

If it is true that architecture reflects the people that produce it, their life, faith, hopes and fears, the following comments will be helpful for the architect’s preparation.

There followed a description of Our Faith, Our Heritage, and Our Cultural Crisis and Position in Time. Some of the significant items were these: We believe that creative architecture will make people aware of the resources of our Christian faith. Men thirst for God and are particularly desperate in our time. For many people God is transcendent and distant. Our building ought then to reflect the intimacy and eminence of God as well as his majesty. Man, if we correctly evaluate his predicament, feels incomplete, fragmentary, and anxious. Our church ought then to enhance his desire for wholeness, and develop his capacity to fulfill his divine destiny and confirm his nature as a potential child of God.”

It’s a lovely paragraph. So interesting, that phrase “particularly desperate in our time.” 1958 seems rather idyllic when compared to 2010, but such is the nature of our perception of the present. When the resulting architecture is viewed in the context of the congregation’s stated intention, it truly is inspirational. You can read more about the present day Pilgrim Congregation here.

The church building is an understated testament as to how great architecture can capture nobility and yet remain humble. The angularity, the natural stone in concrete, the low slung ship-like main structure suspended beneath bone white cantilevered ribs, all of it integrates the intention of the architect and the Redding congregation.

When I used to work in Chicago and New York, I saw many examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work and influence. We are graced to have this particularly spiritual example in our community. You can read more about his designs for sacred spaces here, and find a site devoted to art of Frank Lloyd Wright at the link.

The existing church is only 20% of the original intended structure. How can we complete the vision?

The newer Sundial Bridge has become the architectural symbol of Redding. It’s a bold piece of soaring bravado. I think this church captures a more representational expression of our community and setting. I could take pictures of this all day long. It’s Really Redding.

Aren't the wheels supposed to be on the bottom?

This view greeted drivers on north Lake Blvd today.

I’m guessing what must have happened was that the tongue came off the ball. Then the rig flipped, but was held on the tow vehicle by the safety chain, and drug to the side. I’m sure that was an “Oh sh**!” moment.

The food is tasty and served in very generous portions. The pulled pork is my favorite. You can add all kinds of condiments to suit your taste.

And no, it has not been tested yet. We have a few more weeks in bottle before sampling. Darn it.

Is it cold where you live today?

We’re having a cold day here in Redding too. The high is only supposed to get to be around 58f. Brr. That seems about average here in January.

Of course, 58f might seem absolutely tropical if you live elsewhere.
Redding ca weather

In my prior life as a corporate manager at Bell & Howell, and then Kodak, I had employees in places like Montana and Colorado. Our headquarters was in Chicago, and also Rochester NY. I had to visit all these eskimo villages periodically on business travel. Often in Winter. Usually in Winter, or so it seemed. I remember some cold days and nights where the temperatures were completely insane, and exposure could quickly be fatal. Every night I would get home and thank God I found Energy Pro Heating & Cooling to install a new state of the art furnace in my cozy home. When it drops well below ZERO for days on end, you might as well be another planet. People get a lot more serious. Always, the best part of any business trip was the return to Redding. Then you hear locals complain about it being 50f. Brr! We all need to take care of ourselves and our loved ones this winter. Stubbornly refusing to get your furnace fixed is not the way to do that! I urge you to go to Buric Heating and Air Conditioning to ensure your house is a regulated temperature throughout the coldest months of the year.

Anyway, sorry for you eskimos huddling in the blue and purple zones. I remember what life was like there in Winter for you guys. Be careful. I remember some of you bragged about your hardy resilience in the face of adversity. If you tire of that teeth chattering bravado, click here.

Also, sorry if this post seems smug. It’s more like grateful. Our thanks also to Weather Undergound for the visual reminder, it’s Really Redding.

An old car brings back Kodachrome memories

Alfa Romeo in a field
“So why did you put that old car and barn in your blog header? It doesn’t look Really Redding,” asks Karry.
Alfa Romeo in a field
Not Really Redding, but I did spot this car sitting in a field adjacent to a home I was showing in Cottonwood. It brought back a gush of memory. I bought an Alfa Romeo like this for a few hundred bucks when I was 15. Well, maybe it was in slightly better shape than this, but so was I back then. Who can forget their first car? As you get older, your favourite make and model of car gets older with you, cars get upgraded and new, more desirable models come out. It makes me so sad! It’s more of an option these days to replace parts on your old car from services like TDC Automotive and build your beloved motor back to life. Sometimes I when the memories hit me like that, I wish I would have attempted to keep my little AR alive.

Alfa Romeo in a field

It was a poor choice for practicality. It literally came with a second car just for parts, which was good, because parts were near impossible to find since I didn’t live in Italy. Nowadays, car parts are easily accessible with websites like Czok, mostly used for upgraded performance and style. But who cares about that when you’re 15? I envisioned myself driving it looking like this one, shiny, red, and sleek, whilst hoping that it didn’t break down on me. But when you buy a car that isn’t really practical, I almost expected it to happen. I hear so many stories of people needing to look for something like these Woodward Synchro-Start Solenoids because their engine has become faulty and they need to get it replaced as soon as possible. Luckily there are so many places that sell them these days that it might not be much of a problem. Surprisingly, I don’t think I ever ran into any problems with my little old car. So, I went looking for photographs of my red Alfa among my oldest shots, and at my parent’s house, but found none. How odd. Nowadays I take photos of life’s smallest details, but back then it wasn’t important. Or so it seems. Perhaps it’s best. In my head, the Alfa was bold and stylish, but the reality was probably something more like this one out to pasture in Cottonwood.

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, Oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away

Thanks Paul Simon, for the bittersweet observation.

Ringing the bell for the Salvation Army

Salvation army bell ringers
A familiar looking woman and a couple of kids from her school were seen ringing the bell for the Salvation Army this weekend in front of Raleys Supermarket. It was mighty cold outside, and we need to give a shout-out to the manager of Lake Blvd Raleys for sending out some hot chocolate without even being asked. I’m told it really hit the spot, and made bell ringing much cheerier for everyone. Thanks Raleys! Thanks Ringers!
