From Redding's newest church to it's oldest

Last week I featured Redding’s newest church. At least I think it was the newest. This one is our oldest, I think. A difference of 115 years.

Here we see PG&E starting the pilot light on the heater for the coming winter. I found it surprisingly bright inside, illuminated by natural light.

ChurchofChrist4There was an article in redding.com about the intention to move the church to make way for development. But not enough money was raised, and the idea has languished. Given the current glut of vacant commercial property in town, perhaps the church will be spared for a while longer. I couldn’t find anything about the current congregation on the web. When it was built, it was the Zion African Methodist-Episcopal church. There were churches built in Redding prior to this one. Most were larger, but all were burnt or demolished. Only this humble testament to faith remains.

Redding ca Risen King Church
Risen King Church on Oasis road across from Gold Hills is one of the newest church buildings in town. Maybe the very newest in fact. Looks like these folks moved here in June from a building on Mistletoe. It’s lovely building, and today it beckoned me stop as I drove by. I need to photograph this. What a nice day, and the building looks terrific.

This Baptist Church appears to be very web-friendly. They have a large site HERE, and at the The Stirring, whose car stickers you see around town. At their website, I watched an interesting online video of baptisms in Whiskeytown Lake.

Really Redding.

Redding flag at half mast for firefighters

With thanks for the tip and video to owner-builder Ken Swanson and special thanks to the Enterprise Lions Club for our proud community flag. Godspeed, all firefighters.

“Today is National Fallen Firefighters Day, the first Sunday of the month of October. The Enterprise Lions proudly lower the I-5 Flag to half staff in honor of all those who gave their lives in service. And the families of the fallen ones who live with loss. Bless all of you who know one or more, of these fine American hero’s. Enterprise Lion, Ken Swanson.”

Airshow 2009 features Blue Angels

Pre Redding airshow flight
This year Redding’s airshow features the Navy Blue Angels. They always put on a spectacular show. Today they were practicing, and even though I live many miles away from the airport, I took a couple shots from out back.

The show runs Saturday and Sunday. I understand the Saturday show is sold out. Pretty cool stuff, and a big community fund-raiser.

Buckeye Tower Mart gets upgraded

Tower Mart v2 opened in the Buckeye part of Redding yesterday. It’s a nice upgrade to the area.

Gas prices look attractive. And it has an automated Car Wash.

I know they are concerned about the competition over at nearby locally owned Variety City, so be sure to patronize them as well if you go out to see the new store. Variety City has a lot to offer too. We wish great success to both businesses.

Pat Karch Band at Sundial Bridge Cafe photos

We went for a walk to the River Trail yesterday evening, down from Hilltop, a nice short cardio walk. We didn’t know there was a band playing. Approaching from the north side, we could hear Pat’s unmistakable keyboard licks from a mile away. I knew who it was after just the first few bars. Pat Karch is an awesome player.

Joe Catanio joins the trio to sing the standards. Pat is such an amazing player. Even though his singing and keyboard chops are so overwhelming, he is the kind of player who brings out the best in others around him. That’s why he plays in so many bands around here. Talent and class, the rarest combination in musicianship. Plus he’s really nice. A true Redding treasure. Upright bass player Bruce Calin, and percussionist Bobby Viramontes laid down the the groove nicely. They showed their skills and fit the bill.

Then a leisurely stroll back to the bridge brings the color.

What a great evening stroll. The river-cooled air carried waves of jazz aloft, and was perfume for all the senses. Does it get any better than this? Did I mention they are playing there again tonight?

It don’t mean a thing if it aint got that swing. The bridge was totally swingin’.

Worst Persons in the World

They say there’s no “bad” publicity in the world of entertainers and celebrities. There’s only publicity. If true, Redding has been getting it in spades over the last few days. MSNBC’s Keith Olberman has been featuring our own Congressman Wally Herger as the Worst Person in the World, and now similarly features Herger’s congressional aide on national TV. It’s nice to be noticed. Isn’t it? Well, isn’t it?? C’mon, now.

Missing. Have you seen my imaginary friend?

Spotted this poster at the Holiday Market at the corner of Shasta View and Hartnell.

“Frequents discount sushi bars and polka raves.” But then, who doesn’t?

On the other hand…I love my hometown, but soon I start thinking that seems awfully snarky and clever for a random poster at a Redding supermarket. So I Google “My imaginary Friend Steve” and get 89,000 hits. HERE is the top of the list. So much for originality.

What could it all mean, though?
