Spotted this sculpture watchdog in north Redding today.
Looks effective enough, and probably doesn’t eat much. It’s Really Redding.
Redding fireworks Fourth of July 2014
As seen from our friend’s patio overlooking the Sacramento River. Music by Craig Padilla and Skip Murphy for a 2007 live recording at Turtle Bay. Fireworks generously provided every year by the philanthropic McConnell Foundation. Thanks to all involved!

Awesome fireworks on the fourth. It’s Really Redding.
Petunias perfect for Redding
These Petunias love Redding weather evidently. All you see here is from only 3 plants!

This blog was mentioned in a recent Marc Beauchamp column in the Record Searchlight writing about drought landscaping. These need water, but really not much under mulch. And they reward you with this riot of color.
Salt and Savour bring the flavor
Here’s a new locavore treat. Salt and Savour make sauerkraut in Dunsmuir. I bought a jar recently. The first application that came to mind was a kraut hotdog.

I know I was thinking of that flaccid, pale, and vinegar driven sauerkraut. But oh no, no. This is nothing like that.

“Subtle,” says the delightful Karry. Agreed. There is a lot going on in this kraut, but it doesn’t hammer your taste buds. Instead, imagine cut grass or a street after a rainstorm. The tangy caraway blend seen here has a nice veggie crunch in each bite. Surprising.
Sauerkraut also goes really well with a pastrami on swirl rye. And hey, guacamole. It seems this jar won’t last long.
The health benefits of naturally fermented sauerkraut are well documented. Nevermind that. It tastes good. I’ve heard their product is now available in Redding at the Farmers Market on Saturday, behind city hall. Salt and Savour are on Facebook too, so give ’em a Like. Highly recommended local food.
Shooting Stars in a meadow
Captured these images from a meadow off Mt Eddy, about an hour’s drive north of Redding. Very pretty.

From Wikipedia, “Dodecatheon is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Primulaceae. The species have basal clumps of leaves and nodding flowers that are produced at the top of tall stems rising from where the leaves join the crown. The genus is largely confined to North America and part of northeastern Siberia. Common names include shooting star, American cowslip, mosquito bills, mad violets, and sailor caps.”
Mad Violets. They’re Really Redding.
Redding Rodeo this weekend!
Actually, we celebrate rodeo all week long in Redding with many civic events that culminate in the evening show at the rodeo grounds. Here are a few images I captured at the 2012 event to get you fired up for this year’s spectacle. It’s a unique tradition here.

Our longtime rodeo tradition keep on going. It’s Really Redding.
Craft Beer and Jet Cars on tap at Redding Dragstrip
A unique and classic Redding experience is available to you this weekend. Craft beer and drag racing for Nights of Fire!

The craft beer is from Fall River Mills Brewery.
You won’t find a more down-to-earth carnival of speed anywhere.
Redding Dragstrip is the longest continuously operating NHRA sanctioned facility in the known universe. This race event only comes around once a year. Nights of Fire!

A few images of the Craig Padilla performance
Had a great time at the Craig Padilla concert in Red Bluff last night. Here are a few quick images I captured.

A great time was had by all. There was a film crew there, so hopefully we’ll get some video. The event was a benefit for a local scholarship fund. Thanks Craig!
Camden House offers a glimpse of Shasta history
Merry Christmas to you and yours on this holiday eve in 2013.
Here’s the historic Camden House just west of Whiskeytown Lake with some holiday decor.

There are historic tours listed at the Whiskeytown Ranger led tours page. This from their web site
“Walk In Time (2 hours)
Wednesday and Saturday at 3:00 pm
Discover how pioneers/prospectors Charles Camden and Levi Tower reshaped the landscape to create a home for their families and an “oasis” for many travelers during and after the California Gold Rush. After a tour of the Camden house, built in 1852, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the area, then try your hand at finding gold the old-fashioned way-with a gold pan in the creek! Please bring a bottle of water and extra clothing if you choose to get wet. Meet the ranger at the Tower House Historic District parking lot in front of the bulletin board kiosk.”
