Lassen gets a bit of snow

And then, looking back at lovely Redding California from the ridge. We live in a beautiful locale.

Even in this dry year, beauty everywhere. It’s Really Redding.

Peas on Earth

This unseasonable Spring started last December, apparently. The lovely Karry put some peas in the garden, and here they are coming into production, well before the end of January. So crisp in stir fry!Peas1

Don’t miss 2 Across at Riverfront Playhouse

Wow, this is local theater tour de force. Take two of Redding’s most experienced actors and put them in a play that is little more than constant tightly written dialog.
2across1The play takes place on a BART train in the wee hours of a morning commute. We’re taken along with these two on their journey from strangers to intimacy in two compelling but funny acts that breeze by like scenery from the train.2across2The spare action contrasts with the quick wit, and soon you are drawn into to the inner worlds of these complex characters. Their love of the New York Times crossword puzzles serving as theme to solving the puzzles of their own lives. The outcome is satisfying, and perhaps predictable. But the journey is so utterly engaging that the destination seems only an afterthought.2across3Obtaining tickets to a Riverfront production is ridiculously simple. Log in to the Cascade Theatre website at the link, and pick your seats. Tickets with our printed name on them were waiting at the door. It works flawlessly.2across4Terrific work by actors Bob Koroluck, and Lisa Murphy Collins. Directed by Kay Overbay. You’ve still got a few dates to choose from. Don’t miss your train!

Cicada Cantina Restaurant in Redding

This is one of the newer restaurants in town. It’s housed in a former Chevy’s location on Hilltop Drive. And much like Chevy’s, it serves a sort of Cali-Mexi food fusion.
Cicada exterior 1

Cicada exterior 2There’s a big banner to remind everyone they won a popularity contest at the newspaper. Redding is an unusually tough town for good restaurants, and the only popularity that really counts is a full house.

Cicada Cantina also has an outdoor patio, and a full bar with emphasis on specialty margaritas. Sun – Thur 11am – 11pm   •   Fri & Sat 11am – 1am 530.638.4979  Give it a try.

“Don’t look down.”

Saw this tree trimmer mirroring the Sundial Bridge in Redding today.
Tree trimmer
One less tree to water in a drought year, I suppose. Actually this kind of pine tree, when they get that tall, are at random risk of falling over at inconvenient moments. Like when you’re under them. A safety issue too near Highway 44, probably.

ShastaShots.com is a candle in the darkness

Author Carl Sagan described a “demon haunted world,” where fear drives people to make foolish and unscientific choices. As for me, I am old enough to have met an actual child stricken with Polio. Yesterday, when I took my mom to the doctor’s office, I saw a sick child showing flu-like symptoms. Was that child not vaccinated? It seems more people lately are making choices for their children based on myth, and not science. Believing the word of celebrities over that of physicians. Please don’t let the demons win. Shasta Shots has a list of the vaccinations your child needs to be well protected against real diseases.

League of Women Voters Soup Supper 2014

We like to attend the annual Soup Supper put on by the local League of Women Voters, where Erin is a member. We couldn’t stay for the food, which always great. And we missed the speaker too, darn it. Really wanted to hear from County Clerk/Registrar of Voters Cathy Darling Allen. But it was nice to stop in and say a quick hello to everyone. Here are a few images.

Siskiyou Wanderers set out on the trail for fun

Not all who wander are lost, or so the saying goes. For those Redding folks who’d like to see more of fabulous Siskiyou County, there is a group of hikers. And they have a website:
Siskiyou Wanderers websiteOur unseasonably dry Winter makes for some tough sledding as of now. But it’s great for hikers. Looks like they have about a dozen great hikes scheduled for the near future. Siskiyou County holds a vast treasure trove of natural beauty. All starting just an hour or so drive north of Redding. Check it out. Thanks, Wanderers.
