Growing California larger instead of splitting it north and south

There’s been talk (again) of splitting California in two, north and south. What if a better idea is to grow California into a larger nation/state instead? Would the trade-offs inherent in becoming a larger western state be offset by the value of losing the irrelevant influences of Washington DC and New York?
