Jack’s Grill, a Redding institution

For more than 75 years, Jacks Grill has been serving Redding. The iconic standalone structure is a throwback to California Street’s rough and ready past. Jack’s longtime popularity and staying power is exceedingly scarce among Northstate restaurants. I regularly see patrons lined up at opening time daily, as below.

We hadn’t been for a long while. Let’s go.Jacks GrillI’d heard they recently turned up the lights, and so diminished some of the charm. Hmm. Jacks1

Well, if they did indeed turn up the lights, then my vision has only gotten dimmer. It looks no different to me than it did 40 years ago.

Okay. Minus the thick fog of cigarette smoke, back in the day.Jacks7The darkened setting lends Jack’s mysterious ambiance. Jacks9This bar is usually full. A place to see friends and to be seen.

Below,  the legendary salad.  Straight-up ice-cold iceberg lettuce drenched in bleu cheese.Jacks6Jacks3No question, the lovely Karry’s fried prawns were perfection on a plate. My New York steak was nicely done. I asked for rare, and that’s what I got. The baked potato sour creme and chive accompanied by pats of butter are EXACTLY as I remember it, circa 1978.Jacks5Jacks4
Looking for trendy cuisine? Or hipster nouvelle? Get outta here. Go away. #BlankStare.Jacks11
The bill arrives with a flashlight. I needed it.

Care for a slice of 1940, served up like smartphones exist only in sci-fi novels?

Yeah, Jack’s.
Jacks10
Way back before the internet, and when I was working for a mega-corporation, whenever a bigshot manager or corporate executive came to town, they all wanted to go to Jack’s. Famous even then. It has always so perfectly exemplified the full-on Redding – California Street experience.

No, this isn’t Applebees. Nor is it the Outback. Nope.

Jack’s is seriously just about as Really Redding as you can get.

Old Millhouse Deli in Redding

If you are looking for a taste of funky, old time Redding, yeah… they serve that here at Old Millhouse Deli.
Millhouse8-1280
It’s been around a long time, and managed to evade much change. We are reminded of the relaxed and unpretentious restaurants and delicatessens that sprinkled Shasta County from the late ’70s. Places like Le Chamois on Market Street, or at least a half dozen other pecky cedar palaces whose names have faded over time. The vibe has not faded, however.Millhouse 7-720Millhouse5-1280Millhouse 4-1280Above, the fresh potato salad side. Below, the chicken sandwich is a standout, moist and satisfying. The lovely Karry had a BLT. We’ve eaten here countless times over the years. It’s one of the few restaurants near Whiskeytown Lake.Millhouse 3-1280

Millhouse10-1280Looking for nouvelle cuisine coupled with contemporary atmospherics and free wi-fi? Old Millhouse has none of that. But if you want a course of authentic Old Shasta with a side of ’70s funk, well you just hit the jackpot.

The Old Millhouse Deli has a Facebook Page, but I’m not finding a website. It’s not that kind of place, really. They are semi-famous for epic pizza and music on the outdoor patio, but this drought year, you may not get that full experience. Also, the last time we were there, the sign out front was shattered into pieces, so you might need your GPS to even find the place.

Worth it.

Really, really Redding.

Digging Dunsmuir’s Dogwood Diner

Dogwood front 1280Another great Dunsmuir dining experience awaits you at the Dogwood Diner.

Cornerstone Bakery and Cafe in Dunsmuir

You can hardly get more central Dunsmuirian than the Cornerstone. A delightful cafe and bakery next to the California on the main street through town.
Cornerstone Cafe1The interior evokes memories of historic eateries infused with modern hipster vibe. Great colors, and very Dunsmuiresque art pieces on the walls. It is a timeless eatery. Nonetheless, the sales orientated world very rarely stays the same. Going to https://www.salesforce.com/blog/2017/11/15-sales-statistics.html will show you that.

Seen below, a trout fisherman seems ready to hook one of their excellent bakery items.
Cornerstone Cafe2The delightful Karry opted for the Cuban Pork Sandwich, slices of pork loin, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mustard and mojo on a french roll. Not sure what mojo is, but it tasted great. I had a salad and the soup of the day, which was a terrific Clam Chowder, along with a Shasta IPA from one of several taps available.

Cornerstone Cafe7

Cornerstone Cafe8
Being a bakery, they have a selection of fresh desert items on display.
Cornerstone Cafe3I couldn’t find a website for them, but I did find the Cornerstone Bakery and Cafe menu online. If you think you could compete with this establishment then you should research extensively the the affordability of doing so. A good starting point would be finding a suitable location and then using a comparison site like Simply Switch to ensure you are keeping bills as low as possible. If you do as well as the Cornerstone, then you could be onto a winner. It all looks very tasty, and I know we’ll be back to try more of it. Looks like we’re hooked! Open for breakfast and lunch, but not every day, so check ahead. 5759 Dunsmuir Ave, Dunsmuir, CA 96025 530-235-4677 .

Heritage Roasting in Shasta Lake City

Need some locally roasted coffee? Perhaps on your way to the lake? Heritage Roasting is right on Shasta Dam Boulevard at Locust. I happened inside a few days ago when a Spring thunderstorm made it impossible to work outside. It has a terrific, almost urban,  coffeeshop vibe.
Heritage2Heritage1I snapped a quick view of the front on a sunny day.

Trinideli in Weaverville

Edit 2019: Alas, Trinideli is no more. The New York lives on, however.

Our journey to Trinideli actually began in the New York Saloon
(Tether your horse in the rear, it says).

The New York Saloon exterior2a

But when we got hungry, it turns out they don’t serve food at the New York. The pizza place next door is closed for renovations. Guy at the other end of the bar suggests Trinideli, just around the corner. The New York Saloon

Trinideli1
It’s actually on Highway 3, but really close to Main Street.
Trinideli4The homey interior lends a welcoming vibe.Trinideli3

Anchor Steam on tap. Hot Pastrami on rye. Oh yeah, that works. True deli style.

Trinideli5“#1 Sandwich in the Northstate,” a bold claim. I suggest it’s worthwhile for you stop in and decide for yourself. They offer over 40 custom-made sandwiches, salads and soups from scratch, meat & cheeses by the pound, and weekly specials. Dine in/Take Out. Check out their menus online at the Trinideli website. Located in Downtown Weaverville , One block up from the movie theatre, on Hwy. 3, next door to Alp’s Lock & Key Army Surplus. 201 Hwy. 3 & Center St. (530) 623-5856 Monday through Friday 6:30 am to 4:00 pm, Saturdays 10 am to 3 pm, Closed Sunday.

Shameless O’Leery’s Irish Pub in Redding

We just happened to be at lunch with a few friends at Shameless O’Leery’s Irish Pub today, and as it happened, today is St Patrick’s day! Luck of the Irish, I’d say.

A fine time was had by all. Their food is terrific too. Shameless O’Leery’s has a well designed website at the link. But you don’t really need a website for this, do you? Just go.

JJ’s in Hat Creek features locally farmed meats

JJ’s is located in the Hat Creek region on Highway 89 at Old Station.
JJs cafe
It’s a cozy, country style cafe, popular with locals and tourists alike. And there’s a patio out back too. Regardless of the weather, JJ’s has accommodation for everyone. Their spacious setting, and their efficiently-worked kitchen that has the best refrigeration options (check out this refrigeration company for more information) allows them to prepare the best food for all of the customers who pass through here daily. Something as small as this could have an effect on how successful a restaurant can be in the long run. As it has a patio, it’s already one step there. JJs Counter

JJs tables

JJs beef

Their meat comes from Hat Creek Grown in the Hat Creek area. From the JJ’s Cafe website:

Home-style Goodness, and lots of it!

At JJ’s, we bake our own breads, pastries, pies, cookies, and more. We cure our own corned beef and smoke our own pastrami and pulled pork. Our burgers are made from a 1/2 lb of locally-grown, grass-fed Black Angus and served on a fresh-baked bun. Most people would look to restaurant consulting companies to help them set up and run, but in this case we pushed on without this and made our own little cozy place.

Come on up and join us. You won’t go away hungry!

JJs foodBelow, a triangle peg game at every table on which to test your IQ. My score was predictably low, so the lovely Karry enjoyed showing me up.JJs IQ

The Hat Creek highlands are as lovely a spot as you can find on this planet. The journey to JJ’s from Redding is as important as the destination. Hat Creek is world famous for amazing fly fishing, and the scenic wonder of its lava rock lined journey from volcanic heights to the sea. Savor the skies, mountains, and trees, and then on to JJ’s for a special meal.

We see the owners Chuck and Anne Woodman are mentioned in the newspaper today as planning on opening a restaurant in downtown Redding. But why wait? JJ’s is open now. Seasonal hours posted on the JJ’s website. JJ’s Cafe 13385 Hwy 89 Old Station, CA 530-335-7225
