The weather was perfect. The strip had a great turnout. Some seriously fast cars showed up. And all manner of road warriors tested their reactions and machinery, true to the spirit of Street Legal Racing. Here are a few images from last Saturday.

It was also Big Bike weekend, so there were plenty of cyclists in attendance. It was a really successful event for our local, non-profit Redding Dragstip. I’m not sure when ESPN will run their footage on TV, but I will keep you informed. I volunteer to run their website, so I took a lot of photos I’ll be using throughout the year. Good work RDS. We are a car town, and this institution is Really Redding.
Vanity Faire fundraiser for Shasta County Women’s Refuge
Erin attended the Vanity Faire fundraiser for 2012 on behalf of our real estate brokerage The Address Realty. Riverview Country Club is of course, an unmatched setting.

Erin won a “Trophy” bottle of wine in a Kimono for her creative hat. I think it was a Parisian designer hat by Le Chapeau par Homemade. What did the world do before hotglue? A great time was had by all, and hopefully it was big fundraiser event for the services offered by the Shasta County Women’s Refuge. See you next year!

ESPN to shoot Redding Dragstrip racing this weekend!
So this is a big deal for our local dragstrip and for Redding! The ESPN TV crew is coming out this Saturday night, October 13 to shoot the Street Legal races. They are bringing a professional announcer who is legendary in drag race circles, Bob Frey – official NHRA National Event announcer.

The last time we had a Street Legal event, it attracted more than 120 cars. This event promises to be much bigger AND much faster!

So, how much to get in for this epic event?
JUST $5.
That’s some Really Redding pricing! Come out and be a part of this crazy scene!

Redding area photographer Chris Nelson
Redding’s natural beauty has inspired many photographers. Here’s a local lensman named Chris Nelson. You can see some of his work by clicking on the image, or at distopher.com

Beautiful work from Chris, who is also involved in Dentistry apparently. You can click on over and buy some prints, and/or hire him for your event too.

Single track helmet cam kid shows us what it’s like
This is probably Maine, not Redding. But I just had to curate this engaging video. You may have seen it already, since it seems to be going viral. I say 1000 extra dad-points to you sir, for putting the camera on your kid’s helmet instead of yours. Allowing us to share this experience through the eyes of a 4 year old child.
“Dad, go!”
“Oh, I’m first? Okay.”
Then, dad asks, “Can you see well?”
“No, I don’t have to pee.”
LOL! So much fun. Good work, dad. Thanks for sharing.
Redding’s Melodramatics explain their band name
Redding’s Melodramatics have been playing all over the West Coast lately. They have a lot of original material, but here’s a standout video of the boys playing a semi-acoustic Reggae/Ska cover of a Green Day tune that inspired their band name. Mash it up, mon. As you can feel, they know how to get you dancing. Here’s Basket Case; turn it up.
If you like what you hear, be sure to check out Dirty Beach at the Reverbnation page. Sounds like a hit to me. Caleb Saccheri, Nate Welch, Rich Hughes, Kyle Paolinetti, bringing Melodramatic hybrid Reggae/Ska to your town. That’s Really Redding.
Local artist Robert Soffian
Robert Soffian has been an acquaintance and inspirational local figure to me for many years. Yet, I was not at all aware of his paintings. I know him through his long body of work bringing edgy theater productions to the Shasta College stage. His eclectic and sometimes controversial performances influenced and expanded the horizons of many students. And they often explored the boundaries of community sensibilities, as all good theater should. In person, he is a striking ball of energy and ideas. Robert Soffian just posted some examples of his artwork at his website at the link. I encourage you to visit the Bio tab there as well. A remarkable life in art. That’s Really Redding.

“For me the unconscious is a rational system which painting objectifies.” Robert Soffian
A lovely Redding wedding video
Daniel + Rachel “Silver Lining” Film, by Daydream. Artistically shot in HD. Not sure where this took place in Redding, but I think I saw a glimpse of the river, along with a Stormtrooper or two.

Beautiful. We wish Daniel and Rachel a long and fulfilling marriage. That’s Really Redding.
State of the City Redding 2012
I attended the luncheon yesterday for the State of the City address. I love Redding. Evidently, I’m not the only one.
One real highlight was the “appearance” of Redding’s first mayor, C.C. Bush, from the past. It was a well done and thoughtful apparition. Interesting to think about the Redding of the past and compare it to the present.
Another highlight was this young lady singing the National Anthem. Heartstrings pulled, right off the charts. Good work.

The theme was Redding as a “Can-Do” community.
It can be.
There was also a lot of emphasis on the giving nature of our community and our citizens.
We are indeed.

Also seen, a rare public protest of REU, Redding’s electric utility. Good to see citizen activists expressing their opinion.
There may well be some room for improvement in the structure of our local electric utility. That said, we enjoy reliable and relatively cheap power. Also, as I have opined here before, the protestations rejecting the city policy of “Red Tagging” homes with no electricity service as uninhabitable may be well intended, but are misguided.
Although it sounds nice in theory to let people live in their homes without power, I have seen the reality. As a real estate agent sometimes working with foreclosed homes that quite often have no utilities, I have personally witnessed the awful results. No food refrigeration in Redding heat. Fire hazard candles. Ocean waves of fleas living in wall to wall carpet that has not seen a vacuum cleaner in months. Rats in the dark. If adults choose to live this way, yeah, maybe we should let them. But I see there are very often small children in those homes. That’s what makes it intolerable. That’s the Red Tag reality in our Can-Do city.
